An excerpt from Sunday Adelaja’s book Time is Life. An eye-opener I highly recommend. Like the sons of Issachar, there is a need to discern the times and the seasons (1 Chro. 12:32)..
God created the light and divided it from darkness (Genesis 1:1-5) to make day. What is a day? It is a certain period of time in the creation of God. It means that God created the time frame before His creation. In other words, God created time and after that He created everything else that was supposed to exist in it. God, however, lives outside of time; He lives in eternity. We were all chosen in Him before the creation of the world. The Bible states:
Just as He chose us in Him before the foundation of the world, so that we should be holy and without blame before Him. (Eph. 1:4)
We were chosen by God before the creation of time and the earth. In eternity, God Himself was our dwelling place:
Lord, You have been our dwelling place in all generations. Before the mountains were brought forth [..] even from everlasting to everlasting, You are God. (Ps. 90:1,2)
God dwells in eternity and eternity is a dimension where time does not exist. If God had a plan to create human life on earth outside of time, then people would be eternal like God. They would exist outside of time on earth like in eternity. However, there must be a point of reference for material life on earth. So, God had to come out of eternity to create life on earth within a time-frame that He created.
Life on earth is the shortest moment from the point of view of eternity that does not have a beginning or an end. In other words, in the infinite space of eternity, God made a “pause” to create a different world. We call this pause, life. God came out of eternity to create a different dimension, the dimension of time and life. That life needed a starting point, the beginning.
As the Bible says, after the creation of time, God created space, which is also a condition for the existence of substance. Without time and space God would not have been able to create the earth or man. Living matter remains living only in development, which happens within a time-frame. On the other hand, the spiritual world is stable and eternal. This is exactly what differentiates us from God, He is a Spirit!
But, beloved, do not forget this one thing: that with the Lord one day is as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day. (2 Pet. 3:8)
This, of course, is impossible on earth. Here, the beginning has come into existence as a sign of time. The creation of time and space were the necessary prerequisite for everything else to be created.
Space is a form of existence of matter, its objects and processes. It is necessary for an object to be put into certain restricted conditions of material existence established by God.
Matter is a certain substance that is different from everything spiritual due to its density. This means that all material objects have a certain weight, volume, size, and other earthly or physical properties. Everything that exists in the spiritual world. like God, angels, and other spirit-beings, do not have such limitations.
Another property of matter is its motion; its ability to move from one point in space to another: material objects and human beings can only be at one place at a time.
The earth was planned by God to be a material object. This is why only material objects and human beings with physical properties can function in it. It is for this reason that even God cannot operate on earth except through mankind that was specifically created for the earthly material life.
God Himself is the Alpha and Omega, the Beginning and the End. This means that the beginning and the end meet in one; they connect in God. Like a circle that has neither beginning nor end, time looses its boundaries and becomes eternity in the eternal and infinite God.
God’s relationship with man is built within a time-frame. Despite the fact that God created man in His image and according to His likeness, He limited him within time and space. This helps man to understand that he is not God. Only after finishing our journey on earth will we be free from these limitations.
In order to make the best of our time on earth, we need to understand that God too has limited Himself to time.
3 His brothers therefore said to Him, “Depart from here and go into Judea, that Your disciples also may see the works that You are doing. 4 For no one does anything in secret while he himself seeks to be known openly. If You do these things, show Yourself to the world.” 5 For even His brothers did not believe in Him.
6 Then Jesus said to them, “My time has not yet come, but your time is always ready. 7 The world cannot hate you, but it hates Me because I testify of it that its works are evil. 8 You go up to this feast. I am not yet going up to this feast, for My time has not yet fully come.” (John 7: 3-8)
Jesus kept the law of time in the ministry appointed for Him. Jesus knew what He was supposed to do, when He was supposed to do it, and where He was supposed to do it. God gives us life for us to accomplish a certain mission, commandment, and plan.
We have to understand what is going on now and what is about to happen. This is wisdom. That is why, in understanding time, it is important for us to be prepared. A man who understands the strength of time and how it moves, is wise. Such a man comprehends that God’s time and human time have to coincide. Only then will man be successful.
So teach us to number our days, that we may apply our hearts unto wisdom. (Ps. 90:12)
